After the fall of communism, Poland wanted to change its government fast and efficiently. They wanted to change things like change the type of economy from a communistical one to one that is based on market allocation and private ownership. They developed a plan called the Balcerowicz Plan. Named after the finance minister Leszek Balcerowicz.
This plan was developed to make the Polish currency convertible to other types of currencies and markets, reduce runaway inflation, stop subsidizing state enterprises, and decontrol pricing.
There were parliamentary elections held in 1991. With the Democratic Union Party garnering 12.3% of the vote, the highest in that election. The next party was the Democratic Left Alliance which got 12% of the vote. Many parties were formed and ran and got a few seats.
