greater variation allows the species a s a whole to adapt to changing conditions by shifting allele frequencies towards advantageous traits.

Explanation:

More traits (ie variation) means more adaptations are possible - advantageous traits are reflected in each successive generation and the genetic makeup of the species shifts towards one that maximizes survival and reproduction (ie. def'n of evolution)

genetic diversity within a species is typically a strong indicator of how resilient that species will be to changing conditions in their environment - as diversity/variation within a species decreases, the potential of that species to stave off extinction is reduced.
