To add (or subtract) two fractions with different denominators first you have to find a common denominator.

You can do it by reducing or expanding.

#2/4+1/2=(cancel(2)1)/(cancel(4)2)+1/2=1/2+1/2#

#2/4+(1*2)/(2*2)=2/4+2/4#

If you already have the same denominators you have to add (subtract) the numerators:

#1/2+1/2=(1+1)/2=2/2=1#

#2/4+2/4=(2+2)/4=4/4=1#
