A specie is said to be planar if its constituent parts lie on a SAME PLANE. (imaginary plane)

Explanation:

In case of Organic Compounds ; a compound is said to be planar if all the Carbon atoms lie in the same plane.

Eg : Aromatic compounds

In case of Inorganic Compounds ; there are various types of geometries of the compound in which different-different atoms can lie in a same plane

Eg : In symmetrical compounds like SF_6 which has sp^3d^2 hybridization with octahedral geometry has many planes in which S and F atoms are planar.
