He is known for developing an injectable vaccine, the Salk vaccine:- first successful vaccine against polio.
Explanation:
Vaccine developed by Salk contained killed polio virus. He started injecting the vaccine in 1953 but ten years down the line, it got replaced by another polio vaccine which was cheaper and had to be administered orally.
This was developed by Dr Albert Sabin and the vaccine contained weakened germs. Mass immunization of children in developing countries, and subsequent eradication of polio from many countries could be achieved due to Sabin vaccine/OPV (oral polio vaccine).
It should also be noted that in India, which has been declared polio free by WHO, doctors have again started prescribing Salk's injectable polio vaccine for infants.
