The electron orbitals are filled in the same manner that they appear on the periodic table.
H is
Li is
B is
Continuing down the periodic table you can fill each orbital by the row, block and column of the periodic table.
1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p
The order of orbital filling follows directly from the organization of the periodic table.
