Rules for fraction multiplication

Explanation:

The rules for multiplying fractions are as follows:

  1. Change all mixed numbers to improper fractions.
  2. Cancel (simplify) wherever possible with common factors - any numerator with any denominator as long as there are x signs between them

  3. ("top x top")/("bottom x bottom")

  4. Simplify if necessary.

For example..

2 1/4 xx 2 2/3 xx 5/12 xx 7/15

= 9/4 xx 8/3xx 5/12xx7/15

= cancel9^(cancel3)/cancel4 xx cancel8^(cancel2)/cancel3xx cancel5/cancel12^(cancel4 ^2)xx7/cancel15^3

= 7/(2xx3)

= 7/6

= 1 1/6
