Density is mass divided by volume. You have not given any units in your question.

It is normally given as:

$\frac{k g}{m^{3}}$ $(kg)/m^3$

but can be scaled up or down.

If we take the units to be grams and cubic centimetres.

Then:

$\frac{54 g}{40 c m^{3}}$ $(54g)/(40cm^3)$

Dividing top and bottom by $40$ $40$ gives:

$\frac{1.35 g}{c m^{3}}$ $(1.35g)/(cm^3)$ this can also be written $1.35 g$ $1.35g$ $c m^{- 1}$ $cm^-1$

So this would be read as 1.35 grams per cubic centimetre.
