Let

The two equations are

$3y+x=38$

and

$3y+2x=52$

I would recommend on this problem elimination over substitution and graphing. So times the first equation by $-1$ and that would equal

$-3y-x=-38$

So

$-3y-x=-38$
$3y+2x=52$

Add the two equations. The $y$ 's would cancel out to give you

$x=14$

So now plug $14$ into either equation. I'm going to use the second one.

$3y+2(14)=52$

$3y+28=52$

$3y=24$

$y=24/3$

$y=8$
