You take the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration.
pH = = -log[H⁺] = -log[H₃O⁺]
EXAMPLE
Calculate the pH of a solution in which [H₃O⁺] = 1.4 × 10⁻⁵ mol/L
Solution
pH = -log(1.4 × 10⁻⁵) = 4.85
