What you are actually doing is adding 2 negative numbers together.
$(-32.4) + (-4.5)$

This means go down the number line and then further down the number line....

= $-36.9$

Or you can remove the brackets to get

$-32.4 -4.5" "larr$ pos x neg = neg

$= -36.9$

This can also be compared to owing $$32.40$ and then borrowing another amount of $$4.50$ , so that the total debt is now $$36.90$
