By substitution

$5x+2y=12$ --- $(1)$

$4x-y=6$

$y=4x-6$ --- $(2)$

Substitute equation $(2)$ into equation $(1)$

$5x+2(4x-6)=12$

$5x+8x-12=12$

$13x=24$

$x=24/13$

Substitute $x=24/13$ into equation $(2)$

$y=4(24/13)-6$

$y=96/13-6$

$y=18/13$
