To get the value of x, let's ADD the two equations. Because ADDING will help us eliminate y with ease.

(x + y) + (x - y) = -1 + 3

x + cancel(y) + x - cancel(y) = 2

2x = 2

Dividing both sides by 2, we get

(cancel(2)x)/cancel(2) = 2/2

Now to get the value of y can simply substitute this value of x in any of the two equations
