A chemical element is one of the hundred or so substances that CANNOT be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances. Elemental hydrogen occurs as a bimolecular gas under normal conditions, i.e. H_2. Some chemists refer to it as "dihydrogen" in order to emphasize its molecularity. Apart from the Noble Gases, all the elemental gases are bimolecular: i.e. "dihydrogen"; "dinitrogen"; X_2 etc.
