The hybridization of the carbons in each molecule determines the stability of the negative charge in this case.

Consider,

puu.shpuu.sh

where each carbon in the first molecule is "sp"sp hybridized, and each carbon in the second molecule is "sp"^2sp2 hybridized.

Hence, the electrons in the an "sp"sp orbital are more stable than electrons in an "sp"^2sp2 orbital because they are closer to the positively charged nucleus.
