Stems are the main transport route for sugars and other materials.
The stem is a vital part of a plant because the stem acts as a "highway" for all sorts of nutrients needed for life. Energy from sunlight travels from the leaves to the roots. Likewise the water from the roots is transported to areas all around the plant where the nutrients can be processed and turned into sugars.
