President Eisenhower named Ms. Hobby the head of the Federal Security Agency. This was a non-cabinet post. However, President Eisenhower invited her to sit in on cabinet meetings.
Not long afterwards, on April 11, 1953, she we names the first secretary of the new Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
This agency's name was later changed to the Department of Health and Human Services.
For a short time during World War II she also headed the War Department's Women's Interest Section. She then became the Director of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. This organization was created to fill gaps left by a shortage of men. The members of the WAC were the first women other than nurses to wear U.S. Army uniforms. Ms. Hobby reached the rank of colonel. Additionally, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for efforts during the war. She was the first woman in the Army to receive this award.
