The Temperance Movement was trying to reduce or eliminate the abuse of alcohol in the US.

Explanation:

The Temperance Movement began in the US mostly through ladies' religious societies in the late 19th century. Over time the goal became to regulate and reduce the availability of alcohol, and then the total elimination of alcohol.

They succeeded when the Constitution was amended in the early 20th century to make recreational use of alcohol illegal, otherwise called "Prohibition."

Prohibition was a failure because it was only partially enforced and was incredibly unpopular. The Constitutional amendment was eventually repealed.
