What is the vertex form of $y=-x^2 -3$ ?

This is already in vertex form, it just doesn't look like it.

Vertex form is

$y=a(x-h)^2+k$

But here,

$a=-1$
$h=0$
$k=-3$

Which could be written as

$y=-1(x-0)^2+(-3)$

But, when simplified, it leaves

$y=-x^2-3$

Which means the parabola has a vertex at $(0,-3)$ and opens downward.
