$x=7$ and $y=9$

Just add the two linear equations $x+y=16$ and $x−y=−2$

This gives us

$x+y+x-y=16-2$ or

$2x=14$ i.e. $x=7$ .

Putting this in first equation, $7+y=16$ , hence

$y=16-7=9$

Hence, $x=7$ and $y=9$
