How do you solve 13-8v=5v+2 if it has variables on both sides?

You first bring variables to one side, and the numbers to the other.

We call that the balance method, because you are allowed to do the same at both sides of the = sign, just like you may do with the scales of a balance.

13-8v=5v+2 now add 8v on both sides
13-8v+8v=5v+2+8v-> the 8v's left cancel out
13=13v+2 now subtract 2 from both sides:
13-2=13v+2-2->11=13v->
13v=11 divide both sides by 13 ->v=11//13
